Speaking to the UN Security Council, the Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), Mr. David Beasley, said that in 2020, the world will face the human crisis. worst religion since World War II.
David Beasley said the war was still ongoing in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere, that the second grasshopper epidemic was raging in Africa, that natural disasters were more frequent and that poor countries like Lebanon, the Congo and Sudan. Ethiopia is in an economic crisis.
Mr. Beasley added that 821 million people in the world have food and food shortages. More than 135 million people face poverty. The Covid-19 epidemic could cause an additional 130 million people to be pushed to the brink of hunger by the end of 2020.

According to Mr. Beasley, WFP has to provide food to almost 100 million people every day, of whom some 30 million people depend entirely on subsidies from the World Food Program.
In a video meeting with the Security Council, Mr. Beasley emphasized that, if there were no quick steps to support the 30 million people mentioned above, around 300,000 people would starve every day.
The WFP executive tested positive for Covid-19 in March and is currently in the recovery process.
“In the worst case, we may have to see famines in about 30 countries. In fact, in 10 of these countries, we have more than 1 million people on the brink of hunger, “said Mr. Beasley.
According to the WFO, in 2019, the 10 countries with the worst food crisis were Yemen, Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria, Sudan, Nigeria and Haiti.

According to Mr. Beasley, the Covid-19 epidemic will increase the risk of a “pandemic”. Many people can die from the economic impact of the disease rather than from the virus itself. Orders to block, restrict movement, and restrict social contacts have to be issued to prevent Covid-19 from spreading, causing losses to many people, especially the poor.
WFP – The “backbone” in the United Nations logistics field, has distributed millions of protective equipment, Covid-19 test kits and medical masks to 78 countries. In addition, WFP operates flights to bring doctors and health workers to many countries that need help in the epidemic.
Mr. Beasley called on countries to sponsor more for WFP and ensure a smooth international transportation network to maintain the global supply chain.
“I believe that with our professionalism and cooperation between countries, we can muster the necessary resources to ensure that the Covid-19 epidemic does not become a global food and humanitarian crisis.” Beasley emphasized.
