The pain is still there, but on this earth the germ of life continues to emerge, intensely every day …
Few people expect that, in the history of the Nam Tra My (Quang Nam) land, there have been landslides in which the deaths are 3 times the number of people buried in the landslide in late October. 2020.
In the last days of 2020, Nam Tra My was raining. The road leading to the communes, which was originally abandoned after the ninth storm in late October, was greasy. Looking around us, everywhere we see mountains and hills. More than half a mountain was missing, revealing a yellowish patch of dirt. I shuddered when I remembered that 2 months ago, half the mountain like that hit Village 1, Tra Leng commune, killing 22 people and disappearing.

Ghosts of the haunted stream
In South Tra My, in the rainy season, sometimes people still hear that somewhere in the communes there is a death caused by the mountains. But the destruction of many villages appears to have been due solely to historical floods. In particular, the flood of the Giap Thin year (1964) enchanted many people. Former Tra Leng Commune Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Thanh Tieu (74 years old, retired since 2008) is one of the few people who has been present at the scene of the landslide on the roof of Dak Luc. “The landslide on Mr. De’s roof on October 28, 2020 reminds me of the landslide on top of Dak Luc. The number of survivors can only be counted on the fingers, ”Mr. Tieu opened the story.
Mr. Tieu was born and raised on the top of Tăk Luc, about a 10 minute walk from the top of Tac Luc. He recalled that, in 1964, after a heavy rain, the flood came upstream. The Tay stream that flows through the roof of Tac Luc suddenly becomes fierce, tearing apart the mountain where nearly 100 people live. The mountain collapsed, the roof only remained 5-6 people. The number of missing people is up to 92 people … “The villagers’ people organized a search but could not find anyone. Much later, people in the forest discovered 3 bodies floating along the river. The body Everything was buried. There are families without survivors. At that time, the war was fierce and there were no bulldozers to search, so we had to let the mountain bury our compatriots, “Mr. Tieu suffocated.
People in the Nam Tra My landslide area face a number of difficulties due to losing their homes

Mr. Tieu’s father also claimed that in the history of the village, there was no such terrible flood as in 1964. Since then, people have called Tay Creek a new name: Ma Creek. Some survivors are now married. And they have between 30 and 40 members who are children and grandchildren. Every time Ma stream is mentioned, everyone freaks out. “Too many deaths! Suoi Tay also becomes Ma stream. Disturbing today … That pain is not only for the people who remain, but also for our people … “, Mr. Tieu shook his voice.
Since the 1964 landslide, survivors have been searching for a new place to live because the Ma Creek area has turned flat. The rest of the mountain, every rainy season, landslide storms. During the October 2020 flood, the mountain fell again. “If someone stays in this area, it may be difficult to avoid disasters like the one in 1964,” Tieu said.
Release the village founders
If Mr. Tieu’s father only “caught up” to witness the historic landslide in 1964, then Mr. Tieu was faced up to 2 times: the case on the roof of Tac At that day and the case in the roof of Ong De (village 1, Tra Leng commune). “Originally, the father clan was born in the land of Tra Leng and did not migrate anywhere. Therefore, the “turn” of the village, witnessed the father. The landslide on the roof of Ong De is similar to that of Tac Luc in terms of topography and climatic conditions. Dad had never seen such terrible rain. Everyone in town was shocked. Not only human damage, but also damage to upland property and fields. The cinnamon and tea forests were razed, ”said Tieu.
I returned to Mr. De’s roof when the bulldozer ripped away the old soil with the remaining foundation. Seeing the creek flowing through the town, it’s hard to imagine that it ever raged and then razed 13 roofs where more than 50 people live in late October. In the heavy rain, the old man Mr. Ho Van De waded through the mud to find his ancient high ground, where the graves of 3 children are. The 77-year-old man seemed to have dried his tears from crying. “In the old days, when choosing the terrain to install the roof, one day no one expected my father’s children to lose like this. Knowing that, I did not choose this land to put the roof … ”, sighed old De.

According to the practice of the Xê Dang people, the name of the roof is associated with the name of the founder. That is why, on such roofs, there are often many generations of a family. Like the roof, Mr. De is named after Ho Van De, which is home to many families, children and grandchildren. Noc was established in 1998 with several separate De children’s houses. Little by little, the roof increased because people found a favorable position to build houses. On the day of the landslide, most of the villagers stayed home to avoid the storm, so the loss of life was great. In particular, up to 8 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren died or disappeared.
Ms. De recalled that around 1997, because the area of village 3 (old) was crowded with people, she went through the forest in search of new land to build a roof. She was content to stop on a strip of land with a small stream flowing through beautiful terrain, conducive to economic development. “I think this place is safe because it hasn’t been a landslide for a thousand generations. The stream is also small. Since ancient times, this place was full of people to trade. Chinese merchants also stopped here to set up camps to bring buffalo, cows, salty sauce, black sugar, machete … in exchange for Tra My cinnamon to bring back … When I first arrived my father carefully checked, Walking through the forest for many days to study the terrain, hoping to bring peace to her children and grandchildren. Then he disappeared … ”De said.
Noc Ong Sinh (Village 1, Tra Van Commune) has a settlement history older than the roof of Ong De. Mr. Sinh also passed away several decades ago. Therefore, the topography where residents build houses is considered stable. However, after the midday rain on October 28, 2020, as well as the roof of Ong De, the left part of the mountain collapsed onto the road that passes the roof of Mr. Sinh. 8 people, including 7 from 2 families, were buried dead. Fortunately, the people on the roof of Dak Pat (Village 2, Tra Leng Commune) lost some 30 houses due to flash floods, but due to timely migration, they escaped death. Mr. Ho Van Thu (50 years old), from young to old, has never witnessed such a terrible flood. “A small river flows into a great river tens of meters wide. When I came back from the shelter, I couldn’t find my house anywhere, ”Mr. Thu said. (Follow)
Organize around 4,000 households in areas at risk of landslides
Mr. Le Tri Thanh, Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People’s Committee, also requested the Government and the Ethnic Minorities Committee to speed up the organizing work of the mountain population. In the past 4 years, Quang Nam has used 285 billion VND from the local budget to accommodate nearly 6,500 households; In the near future, it is expected to organize around 4,000 homes in areas with high risk of landslides to ensure the safety of people.
