Ms. Yow was elected to the Eastvale City Council in 2018 and formally became mayor this week. The young mayor is the daughter of a native Vietnamese and a native of Malaysia. He has a 6-month-old son.
“Being a young mother with her 6-month-old son also motivates my desire to serve the community. The city government makes decisions that affect people’s daily lives and it is also where we can see democracy in action, ”Ms. Yow told CBS.
Mayor Yow is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and is currently studying for Harvard’s Master of Public Administration program.
City officials say Ms. Yow is also the policy director for IGNITE, a nonprofit organization that seeks to push for more women to be elected to key government positions.
“It is important that we take into account the perspectives of women and young mothers when making important decisions that affect families. I will be the youngest woman of color and one of the few young mothers to become mayor of California, I hope more women and young mothers will do the same, ”Ms. Yow speaking.
Eastvale is a relatively new city and was only officially established in 2010.
