According to the initial investigation, around 5:00 am on March 20, Mr. Phan Thanh Minh (28 years old, living in Vinh Hoa Commune, Ba Tri District, Ben Tre) was driving a wooden boat transporting his wife, Kien Thi Ut (30 years old) to An Jiang to buy straw.
Minh and his wife also hired Do Hoanh Tuan (35 years old) and Huynh Ngoc Thach (37 years old) to drive another wooden boat that runs parallel to the Tien River to An Giang.
Along the way, two wooden boats tied their hips and then ran in parallel to speak.
At approximately 1:00 p.m. on the same day, the two boats reached the Tan Phong Commune Section, Cai Lay District, Tien Giang. At this time, Minh invited Tuan and Thach to his ship for a drink in the ship’s cabin, while Ut was in the back.
After drinking for a while, there was an argument between Minh and Tuan. Suddenly, Minh burst in and hit Tuan in the face with his hand.
Seeing that, Ut took off the rope from the two ships, Thach and Tuan jumped onto their own ship. Tuan led the wooden train over Minh’s ship.
Minh continued to drive the boat and jumped to cut Tuan’s boat and said that Ut took a knife and gave it to Minh, but Ut didn’t take it.
Suddenly, Minh took an iron pipe to transfer to Tuan’s boat, Ut hugged him again.
Tuan steered the boat back to avoid Minh’s boat when Ut fell into the river.
Ut yelled, “Help me, I can’t swim.” Seeing that, Minh jumped to save Ut. Tuan also asked Thach to jump to rescue him.
About 1 minute later, Thach yelled that he had a cramp and asked Tuan to jump up to help him. Tuan jumped but was unable to save due to the fast and deep water. Tuan grabbed a rope and asked other people on the other train to help him.
When he got on the train, Tuan saw that Minh’s wooden boat was empty and floating adrift, so he drove the boat to Hoi Xuan Social Security, Cai Lay District to report the incident.
On March 22, the bodies of Minh, Ut and Mr. Thach were found.
