If she officially becomes a US trade representative, Ms Tai will play an important role in negotiating trade deals with China and other countries, according to Reuters.
Ms Tai, who is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, is currently the chief business attorney for the Tax and Finance Committee of the US House of Representatives. She said her parents were born in mainland China but raised in Taiwan, before coming to the United States to graduate from the University of Science in the 1960s.
Ms. Tai (45 years old) was born in Connecticut. Some American media outlets call Ms. Tai Taiwanese-American, others call her Chinese-American, a distinction that is not respected in the United States but is delicate in Taiwan.
Recently, Taiwan is headed for negotiations on a long-stalled bilateral free trade agreement with the United States. Taiwan’s leader Tai Anh Van, meanwhile, said the island “has received and is receiving daily military threats” from China.
China, which views Taiwan as its province and is willing to use force to unify the island, has increased military activities near the island.
Ms Tai said that her father was a researcher working on advanced therapies for American soldiers, while her mother still worked for the US National Institutes of Health.
This lawyer said she was very proud to have represented the United States with a colleague of Indian descent in a lawsuit against China before the World Trade Organization. “The two daughters of immigrants have been there to serve, fight and give back to the country that has opened opportunities and hope for our families,” said Ms Tai.
