“The United States welcomes the return of almost all the United Nations (UN) sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran that ended earlier,” said the US Secretary of State in a statement issued on 20. -9.
According to Pompeo, the sanctions, including the arms embargo, will take effect at 8:00 p.m. on September 19 (United States time). “The world will be safer from Iran,” argued the US Secretary of State.
Washington also warned that it would impose measures against any UN member state that does not comply with UN sanctions.
The UN arms embargo that prohibits Iran from exporting arms and selling arms has entered its 13th year. Despite American criticism, the UN Security Council voted last month. There is no extension of this embargo, which is expected to expire next October.
“If UN member states fail to meet their obligations under these sanctions, the United States is committed to using its existing mechanisms to force them to suffer consequences and to ensure that Iran does not.” any profit from activities prohibited by the UN, “Pompeo warned on Sept. 19.
The AFP news agency identified the United States’ move as “unilateral” and as “against” the world. Observers noted that Washington wants to use the power of the financial and economic systems to force countries to continue applying UN sanctions.
China, Russia and America’s European allies have resisted an extension of the arms embargo on Iran.
“Any decision or action taken for the purpose of reconstruction (sanctions) will have no legal effect, “the E3 group of Great Britain, France and Germany stressed in a joint statement to the Security Council.
“This will just be a statement. It’s like pulling the trigger but no bullets are fired,” a UN diplomat told AFP.
Another diplomat expressed frustration with this action by the United States, saying that Washington’s opponents must be happy to see the confrontation between the United States and its allies. If the United States really punishes disobedient countries, AFP warns that tensions will escalate further.
Accusing Iran of not complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement with the P5 + 1, the United States called for the reimposition of international sanctions against the country.
However, the other countries in the P5 + 1 group, including Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and China, objected to the reason why the United States announced the withdrawal of the agreement with Iran.
The Donald Trump administration has repeatedly criticized the 2015 nuclear deal as a failure to stop Iran’s ambitions for nuclear weapons and long-range missiles. In 2018, the United States announced its withdrawal from the agreement while imposing unilateral sanctions that hindered the Iranian economy.
