The United States plans to sell seven weapons systems to Taiwan, including cruise missiles and drones, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Reuters Citing 4 sources they know that the arms batches are manufactured by the Lockheed Martin Co, Boeing and General Atomics corporations of the United States and are in the process of completing the export procedures. The contracts are expected to be announced in the US Congress in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, according to an industry source, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will report the contract to President Donald Trump this week. Some of these contracts were offered by Taiwan more than a year ago, but it is not until now that the approval process begins.
A spokesman for the State Department declined to comment on the news. On the Taiwan side, the island’s defense agency said the arms contract package was just “media speculation.”
Seeking seven arms deals with Taiwan at the same time is a rare move by the United States and is believed to be aimed at putting pressure on China. The Trump administration has been tougher on Beijing this year and the deal, if confirmed, could further strain relations.
The United States, like most other countries that only have formal diplomatic relations with mainland China, has not had formal relations with Taiwan since 1979. Even so, Washington maintains informal relations. and sell weapons to this island. China has always regarded Taiwan as an inseparable territory and declared its willingness to annex at all costs, even by force.
