A New York police officer has been arrested on charges of spying for China for many years.

According to the CNBCBaimadajie Angwang, a New York police officer born in Tibet, China, was arrested by police on September 21.
Angwang, 33, is accused of providing information to officials at the Chinese consulate in New York on the activities of Tibetans and other communities in New York. Angwang is also responsible for “discovering and evaluating possible intelligence sources within the Tibetan community in the New York metropolitan area and other areas.”
Before his arrest, Angwang used to live in Nassau, Long Island, New York and worked in the community affairs unit at the 111 Police Station in Queens. Angwang served in the United States Marine Corps from 2009 to 2014 and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2013 to 2014.
The New York Police Department said Angwang “violated an oath he took” in the United States. If convicted, the officer could face a maximum sentence of up to 55 years in prison.
Angwang initially came to the United States on a cultural exchange visa, then sought to apply for American citizenship on the grounds that he had been arrested and mistreated in China for being a Tibetan. However, a subsequent US investigation found that Angwang still returned to China many times while waiting for his application to be processed and that the information that this man was abused in China was deemed false.
Since early 2014, Angwang has been in a relationship with a Chinese consulate official. In 2018, Angwang continues to build relationships with the second official, the Angwang Information Center, and Angwang calls him “chief.
Angwang texted and telephoned Chinese consulate officials more than 100 times since 2014. During the calls, Angwang once asked his “boss” to attend Tibetan events in Queens. , New York, also attended New York Police Department events to “strengthen China’s soft power.”

Angwang’s father is a retired Chinese soldier and his mother is also a retired government official, US authorities said. Angwang’s parents live in China with her brother, a reserve soldier in the Chinese army.
In 2016, Angwang transferred a total of $ 150,000 to accounts in China managed by his brother and another. Beijing has not given an official response to the incident.
