On December 7, the US announced financial sanctions and travel bans to 14 officials of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of China (NPCSC) because their activities were related to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, including gambling in the removal of opposition MPs from Hong Kong last month.
The new sanctions were described in a press release from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The statement posted on the State Department website titled: “The Face of the Officials of the Chinese National People’s Congress (ie, the Chinese National Assembly) undermines Hong Kong’s autonomy.”
The United States accuses Beijing of “continually attacking Hong Kong’s democratic processes.” The ad says: “One aspect of this attack was the actions of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National Assembly, which deprived the people of Hong Kong of the ability to select delegates in accordance with the China-UK Joint Declaration and Basic Law.
These actions again demonstrated that Beijing completely ignored its international commitments under the China-UK Joint Declaration.
Pompeo said the United States would hold NPCSC officials accountable for these actions. In particular, the 14 sanctioned officials were deputy heads of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of China.
The 14 appointed officials include: Wang Shen, Cao Kien Minh, Truong Xuan Hien, Pharmacology, Cat Binh Hien, Arken Imirbaki, Wear Ngac Tuong, Tran Truc, Vuong Dong Minh, Padma Choling, Dinh Trong Le, Hao Minh Kim, Thai Dat Phong, and Vu Duy Hoa. They just stood under Mr. Flip Chien Thu (Li Zhan Shu), currently the chief commissioner, in NPCSC.
The US Secretary of State said these 14 officials participated in the drafting, approval and implementation of national security laws in Hong Kong. “The NPCSC unanimously passed the National Security Law that Beijing has repeatedly used to suppress dissent and arrest people who oppose Beijing’s coercive policies,” the statement said.
These individuals and their family members will be barred from entering the United States. Your properties that are in the jurisdiction of the US or that are owned or controlled by Americans will be frozen. At the same time, Americans will be prohibited from doing business with these people.
The statement posted on the State Department website concludes: “Our actions today emphasize that the United States will continue to work with allies and partners to hold China accountable for the undermining. promised autonomy for Hong Kong.
Once again, the United States urges Beijing to comply with international commitments and heed the voices of many countries that condemn its actions. “
