Page Daily mail reported that the rare accident occurred around 0:30 (local time) on November 2 at De Akkers station, city of Spijkenisse. Instead of falling into the lake, the subway got stuck in midair thanks to the giant whale tail statue.

Fortunately, there were no passengers on board when the accident occurred and the driver was not injured, just shocked. He was taken to the hospital to be examined. Photos from the scene show the train coming off the tracks and laying on the statue. The underbody was completely destroyed while the rear windows were shattered.

The interesting thing is that the name of the statue is “Saved by a whale’s tail”. “It was a miracle that the pilot was saved thanks to the stern,” said Carly Gorter, an official with the Rijnmond Regional Safety Agency.

After that, the driver was detained for questioning. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Currently, authorities are faced with the task of getting the train down and reopening De Akkers station, but this can take a long time.

The statue “Saved by the whale’s tail” consists of 2 tails designed as if they emerged from the water at a height of 8 m. The statue was built 20 years ago in a park below the train station.
