The State Bank of Vietnam has the first female governor in history | News

On the morning of November 12, the National Assembly secretly voted to approve the appointment of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong as Governor of the State Bank with 467/472 affirmative votes (reaching 97.08% of the total current deputies of the National Assembly).

After that, the National Assembly also voted to pass a Resolution approving the appointment of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong as Governor of the State Bank with the approval of 444/445 delegates.

After the approval of the National Assembly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong became the first female governor in the history of the establishment of the State Bank of Vietnam. From 1951 until now, the banking industry has had 14 governors, but they are all men.

In her new position, Ms. Hong is also the only female member among the government members so far.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (52, from Hanoi) is a teacher in Development Economics. Ms. Hong joined the State Bank in 1991 and was first appointed Lieutenant Governor in 2014; then re-elected in August 2019.
Earlier in the afternoon of November 11, the National Assembly approved the dismissal of the governor of the State Bank of Vietnam with Mr. Le Minh Hung. Mr. Hung was announced by the Politburo’s decision to relocate and assigned to serve as Head of the Party Central Office. Mr. Hung at the same time resigned as Secretary of the Party Committee of the State Bank of Vietnam.
Also this morning, the National Assembly also appointed two new members of the Government, the Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long and the Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat.
