A freighter carrying 43 sailors and nearly 6,000 head of cattle sank off the coast of Japan due to an engine failure during Storm Maysak.

Edvarodo says the Panama-registered ship Gulf Livestock 1 capsized before sinking into the sea. The ship issued a call for help while traveling through the East China Sea in the early morning of September 2.

Crew members were ordered to wear life jackets when the ship capsized. Edvarodo said he jumped into the water and did not see any of the crew until he was rescued.

Gulf Livestock 1 is owned by Gulf Navigation Holding, based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The ship left Napier in New Zealand on August 14 and was heading for Jingtang port in Tangshan, Hebei province, China, when it crashed.
