Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Thuy was the former deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism. She was recognized as an associate professor at age 34 and deputy director of the department at age 35.

“Education is still somewhere in me”

* Ma’am, many people wonder that when you were deputy director of the department, did you choose to work at the university?

– I believe that wherever I work there is dedication. I was previously a professor, while management at the university was an indirect contribution. When I join the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council, I feel that my opinions are recognized and the motivation to have a new experience. I study tourism, marketing, management science, so when I work in the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism I feel like a professional and with direct dedication. It was a great experience.

In the last two years, I feel like what I’m doing is starting to make some progress. But I feel like education is still somewhere in me. In addition, the family factor also has a great impact on this decision. After all, the origin of the woman is still the family, how to contribute to society and balance family life at the same time.

Without the family element, I would probably keep working for a while to complete my tourism projects and aspirations. The educational blood is in us, when motivation turns into action.

* But if she continues at work, she may be promoted to higher positions. Do you regret it?

– I love my job at work and it has given me many lessons. It would be appreciated if you could keep moving up to more important positions, have more opportunities to contribute. But when it comes to the history between home and work, women tend to lean towards the family. When I return to education, I also have a social position so that I can continue to contribute to the city while balancing family life. I have any decision, in any position, I must bring happiness to my family, not to my own position.

I do not regret the position of deputy director of the department, I only regret the things that I have laid the foundations. If I continue, it will be more “flashy” with you. However, today, I have a large contingent of professors, scientists and experts, so I can continue to act as experts. I will continue to contribute to the city on a larger scale and I am in a position to do so.

* You said that education is in the blood, but you have given up to be a government, so did you hesitate?

– Yes. The educational career that I have followed for ten years. Education is your root as said. Everywhere I can contribute and I believe that when I return to work I can contribute directly with my experience.

I accepted in the Department of Tourism because I had been a consultant for several projects in the department before, so I thought I could contribute to the department, especially the experience in strategy and product development in communication and promotion. In fact, there have been some records of a change in the identity of the tourist brand in the city. In my life, I had to make many important decisions and they were all bold.

* Reckless? Specifically, how, ma’am?

– Grade 3, I was the team leader, the high school participated in the work in the provincial Youth Union, the President of the Student Association of the University of Economics (Hue University), a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Association of Vietnam students. I went to France to study a master’s practice, then a master’s study. After completing my master’s degree, I received two PhD scholarships, but decided to stop working for my family, start a business with my husband, and continue teaching at Hue University.

However, after that, the school sent the list of the top 5 students who were selected for the entrance examination with a guest lecturer contract and a PhD. I gave up two PhD scholarships, but this time maybe it’s lovely so I took the exam and passed it. After completing my PhD, my husband and I returned to Hue to continue teaching, but he could no longer adjust here, so he told me to go to Ho Chi Minh City. So I dropped them all in Hue to enter Ho Chi Minh City, starting from number 0.

I’ve been working hard since I was little, in Hue it was also very well planned, no one thought that I would go like this. But from the base that I have and because everywhere I dedicate myself to my passion and work, from scratch I have progressed rapidly, head of department, head of program at the University of Economics – Law (National University in Ho Chi Minh City). Then, I was nominated by the National University of Ho Chi Minh City to join the candidacy of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council. At that time, I was quite young. Maybe the city discovered me because of my delegate job, so they sent me back to the department. Then from work, I went back to Hoa Sen University.

Public-private conciliation

* Until now you have been working in a state environment, how do you feel after a week of work after going private?

– This is a great challenge but I think youth is an advantage, and there is time to experiment. I have made many important decisions and I do not regret it. Any experience gives me many things. Two years working in the Department of Tourism, I have learned a lot about management, management and systematic skills, so I can apply it in a private educational setting.

Many people think that the public and the private will be very different. But private schools are also systematic corporate schools. The Department needs the city policies, the school has the corporation policy, but the independence is quite high. Private school teachers are flexible and adapt fairly quickly. I’m running my way based on absorbing the good from before. The principle in the public setting makes many people think that it is difficult to apply to private schools. But democracy and criticism must have principles. I reconcile these two factors.

* In just four years, Hoa Sen University has replaced four directors, she is the fifth. Do you think this is the pressure and challenge of a young director?

– I accept that challenge. I am still of legal age to experiment and want a new challenge. Some things are hard to do, it’s so peaceful it makes me numb. The aspiration of Nguyen Hoang Group is quality education and international stature. Somewhere people of fireblood are needed to make wishes come true. That wish also touched my longing. Any challenge is tempting, but always risky.

I take a risk because it is worth the time I experience to have the next lessons that I perfect for myself. After a week of work, that pressure is no longer personal, risky or not, but now all my thoughts are how to make Hoa Sen University develop the correct vision and develop its own qualities. Inherently strong, an international standard university, the applied and special university really does have quality, better attention to students and more than 500 staff members; the employees here are putting their faith in themselves.

* One of the pressures of private school principals is enrollment. Where is your solution?

– Rectors of private universities must reconcile the quality of training and enrollment criteria, and create an environment for students and employees. Students want quality, teachers also want quality, a good work environment and guarantee the benefits of life. Therefore, you have to calculate the investment to grow the school. Therefore, the rector of a private university with educational qualities must also be someone who knows how to invest and operate the apparatus to generate income to take care of the lives of workers, reinvest in education and improve the quality of training ….

Private schools have not been duly recognized

* What do you think of the assessment that society makes of the public-private university?

– Private schools make a great contribution to society and the education system, but they have not yet been recognized in an adequate or uniformly different way. It is necessary to see that the final product, whether public or private, is human through education and training to develop a team that works in human cultivation. The quality of private school training has also gradually improved. The private university sector is investing and interested. There are very good private schools that are updated every day on the regional educational map, some have some limitations, but in general the quality of private schools has improved a lot. If there is encouragement and recognition, the quality of private schools will improve and society will benefit.

Age does not say ability

* As the youngest director, how do you feel?

– Age does not indicate the full capacity, management capacity and contribution capacity of each person. When he was young, his ability to explore, his vision was better, he was not satisfied with what he had. That is the advantage. I am not at too high an altitude, I am not making my own barriers. I believe that my strengths are decisive, dare to act, young and humble to be able to absorb, help me not to impose myself. I am 14 years old in education and scientific research. With my knowledge, I think it is enough to make decisions by consensus, to persuade people with confidence.
