On the afternoon of December 22, doctors at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases performed surgery to lift the fetus that weighed up to almost 6 kg.
Pregnant woman named Vu Thi Bich T. (40 years old, Dong Anh, Hanoi), has no history of special disease, is pregnant for the fourth time. The first two times, the woman gave birth normally and the third time she had a cesarean section.
At 11:30 AM on December 22, Ms. T. showed signs of abdominal pain, labor at the 40th week of pregnancy, and was transferred to the Department of Obstetrics of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases. After performing the tests and functional exploration, the doctor immediately indicated that the pregnant woman should be taken for cesarean section.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said that earlier, during the pregnancy monitoring, doctors determined that the fetus is large.
Due to an enlarged pregnancy, the contraction of the uterus of pregnant women easily leads to the risk of uterine sputum, bleeding and danger to the life of the mother. Therefore, the team is mentally prepared to withdraw the hysterectomy to ensure the safety of the mother and to explain it carefully to the family before the surgery.
“Fortunately, however, the cesarean section was later performed without problems, the mother does not need a hysterectomy,” Dr. Ha reported.

The child was born at 1:30 pm on the afternoon of December 22 and weighs 6 kg. The baby was healthy, was crying well, and was rushed to the hospital’s Pediatric Department for follow-up.
The health of the pregnant women after delivery is stable, the uterus contractions are good, the output is moderate, continuing to be monitored in the Department of Obstetrics.
Dr. Ha emphasized that babies born with a large weight often have problems with respiratory failure and hypoglycemia after birth. Therefore, the child will be closely monitored by the pediatrician for developmental indicators, especially the pathology of metabolic disorders, to provide advice on nutrition, reasonable care, to ensure the development of the child. normal.
The doctor also shared that newborn babies with similar sizes and weights are very rare. The large size of the fetus presents many health risks for both mother and baby. Particularly for the mother, in addition to bleeding, there is an additional risk of gestational diabetes.
Therefore, doctors recommend that pregnant women during pregnancy should periodically monitor their pregnancy in medical facilities for prompt consultation and intervention.
