Hundreds of thousands of pieces of evidence, nearly 100 witnesses, and about 500 pages of records documenting the testimony were given one after another. However, the final sentence for the murderer made many people unhappy.
In 2002, when Canadian police raided a pig farm by a man named Robert Pickton, they could not believe they were at the scene of the most horrifying mass murder case in Canadian history. For years, that kind-looking man kidnapped and murdered dozens of girls, most of them prostitutes, and then they reassigned their bodies. Scary stories like horror movies have shaken public opinion in Canada. |
The victims were killed by Robert Pickton.
Confession of fear
During his arrest, Robert Pickton flatly denied the involvement of dozens of missing prostitutes, although much evidence was found on his farm. Robert always maintained a calm face, calm demeanor, and his belief that his crimes could not be exposed.
An undercover police officer pretended to be a prisoner with Robert and this butcher told him that he had murdered a total of 49 people. Robert expressed his regret that he wanted to kill 50 people but ended up losing one victim.
The familiar motif Robert often uses is that he will try to lure the women to a pig farm in his desolate place, killing them by strangling a rope or using a gun. After that, the process of destroying the body was extremely terrible. He will turn human carcasses into food for pigs.
Thanks to the method of handling their horrible corpses, Robert has left little evidence that the police can find and use to expose their crimes.
The Robert Pickton trial, which took place almost two years in a row, from January 30, 2006 to December 9, 2007, is considered one of the longest in Canadian judicial history.
Hundreds of thousands of pieces of evidence, nearly 100 witnesses, and around 500 pages of witness testimony records were released one after the other. Because the case lasted almost two decades, the scene was so chaotic that the identities of the witnesses were not good due to a history of alcohol or drug addiction, defense attorneys deftly exploited and led to lengthy controversy.
Although Robert Pickton claimed to have killed 49 people, authorities only had sufficient evidence for six cases.
Controversial ending
Robert Pickton’s defense attorney, Adrian Brooks insisted that the victims had no obvious connection to Robert. He argued that investigators had conducted the investigation awkwardly and carelessly, and that Robert’s intelligence was too low to plan to kill so many people. Robert’s murder confession is just repeating exactly what the police told him without thinking.
However, the prosecutor objected to Brooks’s argument about Robert’s intelligence. Although he was not intelligent, he thought, there were no problems with the mind. He is a butcher, he is used to slaughter pigs, so he is not afraid to kill.
Furthermore, Robert’s method of not entangling was so effective that, although he himself claimed to have killed 49 people, in court he faced 27 murder charges, but in the end the authorities were only able to pay for Evidence that Robert is guilty. 6 counts of second-degree murder, including victims Mona Wilson, Brenda Wolfe, Sereena Abotsway, Andrea Joesbury, Georgina Papin, and Marnie Frey.
Robert Pcikton was sentenced to life in prison and was not entitled to a pardon for 25 years (the highest sentence in the Canadian legal system). For two years, Canadian public opinion held its breath to see the longest trial in the country’s judicial history. However, for many people, especially the relatives of the victims, this trial is not satisfactory.
The case continued to be appealed for trial in the British Columbia Court of Appeals, then in the Supreme Court of Canada with the final decision made on July 30, 2010. Consequently, the verdict is confirmed and no other will be carried out. trial for the remaining cases.
A horrible page has been closed in the history of Canadian justice, but to this day, it is often mentioned with unforgettable lessons.
