A worker at a funeral home in Argentina lost her job and was threatened by social media users after taking a “selfie” photo with Maradona’s body.
Images appeared on social media showing the funeral home staff in the capital, Buenos Aires, posing next to the remains of the late world soccer icon Diego Maradona. The man placed a hand on the deceased’s head and raised his thumb.
This employee is part of the group in charge of preparing the steps before Maradona’s coffin is left open for family and close friends to see her face for the last time on November 26.
The owner of the funeral home, Sepelios Pinier, told local media that the staff member had been fired. However, this did not stop the anger of many, especially for Maradona’s fans.
“I want the fat man who takes photos of Diego’s corpse to die. I want him dead,” one posted on social networks. “They should strip him of his Argentine citizenship. You don’t do something like that. Totally disrespectful,” commented another Daily Mail.
After surgery to remove blood clots in the brain, Maradona, 60, was discharged on 11/11 and received special care in a town in the capital, Buenos Aires. However, he passed away suddenly after his nap on November 25 due to a stroke.
Shortly after, the president of Argentina announced a three-day national duel. Maradona’s coffin is placed in the Presidential Palace and has been visited by millions of people.
Maradona’s lawyer, Matías Morla, insisted that Maradona was unattended about 12 hours before his death and that the ambulance took half an hour to arrive. He also promised to open an investigation of any anomalies. Morla also criticized the funeral home staff for taking photographs of Maradona’s body and claiming to take legal action against the person.
