In preliminary investigations into some typical cases of infection with the new strain of SARS-CoV-2, clinicians found that clinical developments appear to occur earlier than in patients infected with the older strain.
On the morning of February 2, the Ministry of Health announced that experts from the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology tested and sequenced the SARS-CoV-2 virus gene in 16 samples from Covid-19 patients in 2 outbreaks of Hai. Duong, Quang Ninh.
The results, 11 of the 16 samples have genetic sequences similar to the new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, called B.1.1.7. This strain first appeared in the UK (December 2020).
According to scientists, the B.1.1.7 strain detected in the epidemic outbreaks of Hai Duong and Quang Ninh has a high possibility of infection, the viral load is 4 times higher than the previous strain. The time to eliminate pathogens is also very high and very short, the infection rate increases by 70% compared to the previous strain.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Cap, deputy director of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases is currently assigned to the No. 1 Field Hospital in the Chi Linh epidemic center, Hai Duong, to support the treatment of Covid-19 cases.
To date, this hospital has received treatment for 165 patients with Covid-19. The number of cases may continue to increase, with an expected maximum of 210 patients.
Doctors are known to have transferred some Chi Linh case studies to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for in-depth testing and clinical research on the progression of the disease in people infected with the new strain of SARS-CoV-2.
“Through preliminary research, we believe that with this strain, clinical progression appears to be faster than in patients infected with the previous strain. But the number of cases surveyed is still quite small, so it is not possible to reach a definitive conclusion ”, Mr. Grant information.

Doctors also said that currently, studies and surveys of doctors do not have enough information to answer the question of whether the new strain makes the disease worse and has a higher death rate than the old one.
The Covid-19 patients in Hai Duong are mostly industrial zone workers, so they are quite healthy. However, some other patients in the community are elderly, with many underlying diseases. Therefore, according to Mr. Cap, this stage is too early to conclude on the prognosis of the patient.
“The treatment still follows the Ministry of Health’s diagnostic and treatment guidelines. People with this strain seem to progress more rapidly clinically, so we decided to monitor the patient’s progress more closely to quickly manage each situation. “ Said Mr. Cap.
Regarding the mode of transmission of the new variant of SARS-CoV-2, doctors conceded, the virus is transmitted through the air, including aerosol (aerosol) and through nuclear droplets (the droplets that are released when they dry are will turn into drops. Nuclear flying in the air).
“Therefore, to say that the airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 also implies transmission by aerosols, as previously confirmed by scientists,” Doctor Level said.
To prevent infection in the current situation, Doctor Level recommends that people strictly adhere to the 5K message of the Ministry of Health: Masks – Disinfection – Disturbance – Inattention – Medical reports to prevent infections. In addition, coordinate well with functional agencies in the prevention of epidemics.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Cap and Dr. Vu Minh Dien from the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases were transferred to the Chi Linh epidemic center for professional support starting on January 28. In the early days, the great difficulty for doctors, Cap said, was to transform Chi Linh Medical Center into a field hospital in a very short time. “Chi Linh Medical Center has a fairly small medical staff. When the epidemic occurred, most of their forces had to disperse to serve the F1 isolation zones, so the remaining manpower was quite weak. Only a few doctors with specialist 1 or higher, the rest are recent graduates or specialties not related to infectious diseases. We have to organize intensive training, send a team from the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases to work together to provide direct guidance “, Shared Doctor Level. After that, the experts organized the hospital into 4 treatment teams, each team responsible for 40-60 patient beds. The structure of each team consists of 4 doctors, 8 nurses within 1 who treats patients directly. Round 2 includes 1 experienced Center physician and 1-2 assistant physicians who are responsible for treatment indications. Round 3 are the experts from the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, responsible for consultation and treatment guidance in each specific case, ensuring that all patients are closely monitored and treated appropriately. |
