On the morning of 10/5, the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City said the male pilot from Infection Department D was still in critical condition. Currently, the patient does not have fever, stable pulse and blood pressure, continues to drain, dialysis and the prognosis is still very serious.
So far, this is considered the most serious case being treated in Vietnam, after more than 50 days of treatment, there has been no progress, the male pilot still depends on ECMO.
Especially, according to TS.BS Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, director of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, said that before the patient had only frozen on one side of the lung, now both lungs fall into this situation.
Male patient 91 is being treated in Infection Department D of the critically ill hospital, the remaining 271 cases in Ho Chi Minh City at the Cu Chi field hospital are in good health.
If both lungs solidify, if they continue for a long time, the lungs will become “sprout” for bacteria to thrive in the patient’s body. Previously, during the professional meeting on the afternoon of 7/5 at the Administration and Administration Center online to support the diagnosis and treatment of Covid-19, The Health Board of the Ministry of Health continues to propose the consideration of lung transplant options for patients, in an effort to find ways to cure them.
Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau also said that it depends on many possibilities, first waiting for the situation of the inflamed lungs and the available lung resources. According to experts, if patient 91 does not receive a lung transplant, there will be no effective treatment, this is the last hope. Although Vietnam has had 3 lung transplant hospitals, there are very few reports of lung transplantation in Covid patients. Additionally, for lung transplants, physicians must evaluate many other general conditions.
Until now, patient 91 has been using ECMO for more than 1 month. but the lungs are still frozen, the effusion must drain. Particularly for the SARS-COV-2 virus test, the male pilots were negative and then positive, very difficult to predict. The pilot’s mechanical ventilation was also ineffective.
Today, 10/5, this patient is expected to continue being consulted at the hospital to evaluate the possibility of a lung transplant.
