How many sets of ashes are there in the temple, please?

– From 1975 until now, the pagoda is receiving around 350 ash jars, including the remains collected by the pagoda in cemeteries to bring incense to worship.

During the process of loading the graves into the cemetery, the eligible family will bear the costs, otherwise the temple will bear all costs.

In addition to the ashes in this category, the temple does not receive any more ashes from anywhere or any other source.

So what is the cause of the incident of losing the image to the ashes, Venerable Master?

– Because the location of the remains for too long degraded in March 2020, the pagoda decided to repair it and was supported by donors. Damaged ashes will be replaced and repaired, ashes that are dusty will be cleaned.

During the process, many Buddhists move the urns, sometimes wash and disinfect, drop the nameplate, move the photo into the jar. On the full moon of the seventh lunar month, people came to worship and found that there was no sign or photo on the jar, so they were frustrated.

As abbot, I accept responsibility for this. I apologize and will correct everything, for the convenience of solemn worship.

What options will be taken to the Venerable Master to identify the ashes that have lost their identification plates and photographs?

– What happened was unexpected and I accept responsibility for myself. The pagoda has also worked with the local government, the Central Vietnam Buddhist Church, and has also provided guidance on how to solve the case. To accurately determine the remains of family members, the temple will coordinate with authorities to conduct DNA testing. All costs for DNA testing will be borne by the temple.

Currently, the Popular Committee of District 17 (Go Vap district) has sent officials to the pagoda to help record people’s information.

Through this incident, did the Venerable Master share anything else?

– There are 3 main things the temple has to do: apologize to the Buddhist for mistakes in the repair process in order to cause the incident of the missing ashes of the image, nameplate. The second is to restore the solemn place to worship the ashes. Third, the temple recognizes the opinions and wishes of family members who have an ashes urn for the temple to resolve and soon overcome.

Thank you, Venerable Thich Thien Chieu!
