S Khaled Bambrana, 54, earlier this week had a mild fever and went to a local doctor. He was prescribed medication, but his condition worsened when he had difficulty breathing.

His son quickly took him to Prince Aly Khan Hospital, near his home.

“I took my father to the hospital emergency room around 7:30 pm to 8:00 pm on May 1 (local time). The doctor examined him but refused to be admitted. He said the hospital is not equipped to treat patients like this. He did not test positive for Sars-CoV-2 virus (which causes Covid-19 disease), but was still denied admission. They asked us to move to another nearby hospital, but they also denied us, “Khalid’s son told India Today.

Dr. Anuj Tewari, Executive Director of Prince Aly Khan Hospital, said: “The hospital is not designated to treat patients with Covid-19. By law, we cannot accept patients with the same symptoms as Covid-19.”

The Bambrana family rushed to at least four other hospitals. In particular, a hospital received him and transferred him to a facility in the city of Andheri for patients with Covid-19, but the family declined because he said it was not positive for Covid-19.

Also, a hospital said there was no ventilator and a hospital had a ventilator, but only for Covid-19 patients. Finally, the family took the patient to St George’s hospital and he was accepted.

However, Mr. Bambrana’s health has worsened. The doctor tried to save lives when this patient had a heart attack. They put a fan on him, but he died that night.

Her son said: “If at this time, Mumbai cannot provide support devices and beds for ventilated patients, how can we address the escalation of the Sars virus? CoV-2 spread?”
