According to Mai Hong Bang, director of Central Military Hospital 108, this is the second time that the hospital has performed a limb transplant (hand transplant) from a brain-dead donor, following a transplant performed in January 2020.
The transplant patient was an 18-year-old who had an explosion in chemical experiments three years ago that resulted in the loss of his irreversible hands. Since then, the patient’s life has been difficult, including returning to school.
Professor Dr. Nguyen The Hoang, deputy director of Hospital 108, who presides over the hand transplant surgery for patients, said that compared to the January 2020 transplant, this transplant has some more difficult points: the donor and other recipients blood type (donor type O, recipient group A).

In addition, the degree of limb defect is higher, this time transplant transplant from near the elbow, while the previous time the hand was missing, so the limb volume needs more transplantation.
The transplant took 8 hours, according to Professor Hoang, that’s only half the time compared to the same transplant he had the opportunity to perform in Germany. This shows that technically the Vietnamese crew performed the transplant very well. After 3 weeks of hand transplantation, the patient was discharged from the hospital awaiting rehabilitation.
Doctors assess that the recovery time will last between 1 and 1.5 years and the ability to recover up to 80-90% as originally.
Even more special, the donor’s hands to the patient also donated multiple organs to save a total of 6 people: 2 lungs were transplanted to a patient with primary fibrosis, the liver was transplanted to patients with acute liver failure. cirrhosis due to hepatitis B virus infection, 2 kidneys for 2 patients with end-stage chronic renal failure, 2 arms – hands for the aforementioned patient and a heart transplanted to a patient waiting in the Vietnam Hospital – Germany.
