The image of the people of the central region giving in to the storms and floods, from which kindness emerged, is a very beautiful gesture of the Vietnamese people. One of the people who made the biggest impact on the charitable activities of the flood season is definitely Thuy Tien. But she is also the person who is leaving the most controversy about how to do charity.
Thuy Tien’s enthusiasm and kindness are undeniable. But the way of Thuy Tien is what makes many people question and argue. How is charity correct? How is charity constructive? That is a question that many people ask themselves after seeing how Thuy Tien uses the amount of donations of more than 150 billion.
Many experts, philanthropists and social activists have spoken out and created an open debate on this issue. One of them is Mr. Son Pham, deputy director of the LIN Center. LIN is a center dedicated to helping non-profit organizations, volunteers, and donors promote sustainable development and poverty reduction in the community. One of LIN’s famous programs is the Shorten the Gap Community Fund, which has sponsored numerous projects and volunteer programs at HCMC between 2013 and 2017. In addition, LIN is also a partner with more than 200 non-profit community organization groups in HCMC.
The amount of 150 billion in just one week from Ms. Tien is the fundraising dream of social organizations, usually traditional organizations that are licensed with long-term projects, just write an outline. The project sends new international donors to raise funds of up to 500k or 1 million dollars spent over 3 years.
However, the shift from international to national fundraising is an ongoing process across organizations, which is a positive demonstration that national resources are still available. The participation and support of the people is real so that people who work in social activities try harder. Honestly, it is just one part of a social organization that is licensed and operates under government regulations, in Saigon I know of hundreds of other organizations that volunteer and raise funds very effectively. They usually have a community that trusts them, so they still quietly volunteer, but little is known.
…..
Finally, many people ask, what do social workers do to help people there, but sitting here writing on Facebook? I think it’s that simple, current professional social workers cannot do anything in that area like Miss Tiên because of the different way of doing them. They are also busy working day and night in their community. That is why they support and contribute to the organizations that work in it. It is noted that: Volunteers are beginning to rebuild after the flood, this is how they do it because it is true to the capacity in which they are trained. Europe is also its strength and the lessons learned from many years of flooding. In short, whoever does what I think is best is safe.
To get a more panoramic and multi-dimensional view of the philanthropists and social workers themselves, we had a short interview with Mr. Son Pham about the Thuy Tien story this time.

Hello Mr. Son, can you share your thoughts on Thuy Tien’s controversial charities?
Currently, according to my observations, the way of doing charity of Thuy Tien is not new and similar to the way of the mass organizations and the Front of the Fatherland and many other charity groups. This approach is based on the list and arrangement of the local government, so you can be completely sure of donating money to charity. This is the most effective coordination in the case of Thuy Tien. I think it’s a traditional way of doing this for decades.
Thuy Tien’s philanthropy seems to be effective right now and right now, but what is your take on this long-term approach, going forward?
I think with Thuy Tien’s ability, this is the best way to fork out the money that you can fundraise as quickly as possible, temporarily ignoring your previous statements like working alone, building bridges and roads for people. Folks, the current way of doing Thuy Tien is a timely method.
However, in the long term, the perspective of the social practitioner will be quite complicated, because the way to distribute the money and show the poor, such great poverty, in the long term shows that it is a community without strength. living, unable to recover, and waiting for assistance, but does not display the ability, resources, and people to actively overcome community circumstances. Also, once a lot of money has been invested in generating money, the investment budget for bridges and roads will no longer exist, leading to core community issues like infrastructure, flood recovery, and rebuilding. mate will be a great question.
Therefore, if possible, Thuy Tien needs to balance the current budget and invest in long-term projects with other local resources to recover from the floods.
Thuy Tien’s current way of making money is controversial. For example, the distribution of money to households is not the same, about 10 million, about 200 million. In your opinion, is it the correct way to do charity in large areas of charity?
This question is very difficult because you need to be the right people to get the most accurate answer. I think the easiest time to do it right now and it can be distributed to so many people at once, Thuy Tien should give a fixed amount of money to everyone in a community. We must not spontaneously impose on many people, on few people because we do not have enough time to judge who is poorer than who else, and also to avoid mistrust of others.
In your opinion, how effective and sustainable charity is for those who receive help?
In my opinion it is simply that when the person does charity work, one can think of many suitable options for the recipient, for example a 2,000, 5,000 rice shop, a 0 VND supermarket in Saigon … all The models. This can be organized in all parts of the country without the need for professionals. To be most effective, philanthropists only need to do a little job asking lots of people what they need and providing exactly what they need. However, to be sustainable, charity cannot solve because it is the job of those who are professionally trained and committed to promoting development in a certain community.
From the perspective of an experienced social worker, if you could give Thuy Tien some advice, what would you say to him?
With the emergency aid situation and Thuy Tien’s ability, I think it’s okay that she continues to distribute money like this and the other charities will carry out the donation. Be clear in advance about which region to go to on Facebook and how much other charities can cover the rest.
Regarding the live broadcast, it is necessary to support Thuy Tien to avoid the case that people wait a long time, observations show that the recipients are mostly women and elderly so please let them wait a long time. It’s a good solution.
Finally, with the ability not to compare specific circumstances when mass allocation, I think Thuy Tien should rely on the locality to distribute everything, not subjectively judge the rich and poor based on their appearance. . This is a special case after the flood, so both the rich and the poor are affected, if better, Thuy Tien’s team should work well with the locality to make a list to minimize goals. Pole has occurred causing mistrust in people during the floods.
Thanks for sharing.
