According to the guardian, the attack occurred on the night of November 2 (local time) near the Seitenstettengasse synagogue, Vienna. Three people were confirmed dead and 15 others were injured.

A series of armed suspects opened fire at six locations near the synagogue in central Vienna, Reuters said. Police shot and killed a suspect.

Austrian Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz called the shootings “obvious” a planned terrorist attack “very well organized.” He also announced that the police would take decisive action against those responsible for the attack. The military has been mobilized to help ensure the safety of the city.

Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer warned some suspects who had not yet been arrested and stressed that the names were “armed and very dangerous”. Austrian special forces were mobilized to carry out the search. Mr. Nehammer urged people to remain in their homes until they receive security notices from the authorities.

Police and security officials asked citizens not to share videos and photos of the attack on social media, emphasizing that this could interfere with attempts to neutralize the dangerous gunmen.

Initial reports indicated that the Seitenstettengasse synagogue could be the target of the attack. However, representatives of the Vienna Jewish community said the facility was closed at the time of the shooting and they were unsure of this statement.

The attack occurred the last night before the second Vienna blockade went into effect to limit the resurgence of Covid-19 infections.
