Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung’s trial was held in secret, presided over by Judge Truong Viet Toan (Vice President of the Hanoi People’s Court).
After the trial, Judge Truong Viet Toan came down and shook hands with Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung and other defendants. This is controversial in public opinion.
There are opinions that the judge’s work is disrespectful of dignity and fairness. But there are also opinions that this is the human act of a judge.
Mr. Truong Viet Toan shared: “That day, after finishing my prayer, I went back to my office. At that time, of course, you must go through the defendants.
When he passed defendant Chung, Mr. Chung came over to arrest him. In fact, at that moment, I think very fast. After a bit of hesitation, I finally decided to shake hands, pat the accused, and say with encouragement: “Try to reform yourself well. After 5 years, if you do well, it will be fast”.
Mr. Toan said that, from a legal perspective, such a judgment is strict, judging according to the terms and conditions of the law. Aggravating and mitigating circumstances are properly assessed for the nature and scope of each defendant and applied to a suitable sentence.
Toan said he also shook hands and shoulders to encourage other defendants in the case.
As a judge who served as the presiding judge of the court hearing, hearing many important cases, Mr. Truong Viet Toan said that this was not the first time after the trial that he shook hands and encouraged the accused.
Earlier, after Ha Van Tham (former Oceanbank Board Chairman) trial, Judge Truong Viet Toan also shook hands and encouraged Tham to improve.
“Actually, that’s just showing humanity to each other.“Mr. Toan said.
Judge Truong Viet Toan added that, in court, Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung’s health was normal, but his spirit was a bit depressed. Furthermore, Mr. Chung made a sincere statement, showing his attitude of regret.
