IndonesiaA bus carrying students and parents lost control, plunged into a ravine on the island of Java in the dark, killing at least 27 people.
The Indonesian search and rescue agency said today that the bus crashed on the night of October 3, while carrying 66 people, including high school students and some parents, who were returning from a tour. The driver lost control just before the bus fell off a cliff near Sumedang city, West Java province.
The Indonesian Ministry of Transport said at least 27 people were killed, including the driver, and 39 lucky ones survived.
Footage from the scene showed the bus overturned under the ravine. Rescue forces rushed to the scene to search for the victim. Rescue work was completed this morning and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital.
The cause of the bus driver losing control is under investigation. However, the Transport Ministry said the preliminary investigation showed that the transit permit for this bus had expired.
Traffic accidents often occur in Indonesia due to poor infrastructure and safety standards. In December 2019, 35 people were killed when a bus crashed into an 80-meter-deep ravine on the island of Sumatra. In early 2018, 27 people were also killed in a car accident in the mountains of West Java.
