According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the incident occurred on March 23 at the Kaluga regional air base, about 90 miles southwest of Moscow. The fatal accident was initially reported by the Russian press and confirmed by the country’s Defense Ministry shortly thereafter.

As the crew of the Tu-22M3 long-range bomber prepared for a training mission, the launchers malfunctioned and accidentally pushed them out. Because the height was not enough to set off the parachute at that time, 3 pilots died due to serious injuries when landing.

It is unclear if anyone else was injured in the accident. The Tu-22M3 generally carries four crew members on board.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had opened an official investigation. The fate of the Tu-22M3 in the previous incident is unknown.

The Tu-22M3 is a long-range twin-engine supersonic bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons from the Russian army.

It is a modern variant of the iconic Soviet-era strategic bomber, which has been in service with the Russian military since the 1970s. The aircraft has been modernized several times, the latest being 2018, it has its own name being M3M. This latest variant features an improved avionics system with digital navigation and communication equipment.

Previously, a Tu-22M3 crashed in the Murmansk region in extremely bad weather. RT said the plane “literally halved after landing effort,” eventually exploding in flames and killing three crew members on the spot.
