Ronaldo and Messi have competed for individual awards for the past decade. But in the context of the duo’s aging, winning individual awards becomes much more difficult.
Juventus were eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League last season, when they were suddenly beaten by Lyon. Meanwhile, Barça were humiliatingly eliminated when champion Bayern conceded eight goals. Ronaldo has only scored 3 goals in 8 games and Messi has a similar record.
This year’s UEFA Player of the Year award will be a competition between De Bruyne, Lewandowski and Neuer.
