While attending the Cannes Film Festival, realizing that the organizers were only showing their work on a laptop, “Rom” director Tran Thanh Huy was shocked.
The day after the movie’s premiere Ark, Director Tran Thanh Huy met the press with joy in his eyes. Only after the film was released nationally did he believe his dream of movies came true.
– It took eight years to make “Crisp”, first watching a movie on a big screen in the country, what do you think?
– I no longer watch movies, I prefer to watch the audience. During the screening, I went from theater to theater, choosing a corner to see if the audience’s reaction was exactly what I expected in the segments. For example, in the section of Rom (played by Tran Anh Khoa) and Phuc (Anh Tu Wilson), many people were surprised when the scene was taken in the form of a single shot (filmed continuously, no cutscenes.) . I see “ya” when most people experience the same emotional levels as me: “father” from the movie.
* ‘Chest’: the harsh world of the people who interpret the song
– How do you receive comments on movies?
– I read a lot of positive comments about Chest. But to be honest, I was afraid of being acclaimed. I’m afraid I don’t know where I am. After the short film 16:30 (Rows’ predecessor) received the Golden Kite award in 2012 and several international awards, I kept appearing in the media with winged words. Little by little I misunderstood myself when I was praised as one of the best young directors at the time. More terrifying, even though I knew I was being praised too much, I couldn’t find a way to turn my head. I only realized the fact when I attended the 2013 Cannes Film Festival: Chest join category Short film angle. Upon arrival, my film was only shown on a laptop in one room, the representative of the organizers said a few words of congratulations. Suddenly, I realized that I was in the youth playground. Out there, in the middle of the red carpet with countless sparkles, that’s where true cinema is honored. Upon returning home, I decline any invitation to an interview. I know I am zero.
Now, I tell those things to my brother Tran Anh Khoa. On the day of the premiere, Khoa could not be present because he was studying filming in Canada. The team regretted Khoa and I was happy. I often tell them: the present is only the past, the future is the present. The fact that Khoa is not allowed to appear or celebrate at a big event as the lead actor is probably lucky. That helps my brother less delusional, more consistent with choosing to pursue a film career. If you become an actor, the road with Khoa will be much more difficult because it is difficult to play any thorny character, creating an impression more than Ropes.
– Why did you choose your brother to play Rom?
– If it weren’t for Khoa, no one would take the role. Since making short films 16:30, I asked Khoa to act, then Khoa acted too expressive, so I forced myself to act Chest always. Many people finished watching the movie to love Khoa because it was too much to be executed. For example, the scene with Ro fell into a 10-foot deep grave, had to climb himself, and the team turned more than 40 times. On the day of the premiere, my parents were very sorry and blamed me for not loving her (laughs). For me, when I’m in a movie, I am no longer brothers, because work is the end result. The audience will not sympathize with the permissive. After all, I want to thank Khoa for his sacrifices for the film. But I’m also sure it gave Khoa an experience that not everyone had in their teens.
However, I am not always “rocky”. In the movie, there is a scene in The Ropes frustrated at being cheated on. During the show, Khoa fell from the ceiling to the floor due to an error in the design department and because it was dark. Standing in the director’s position, if I keep letting Khoa go back up to the roof, the scene will be very emotional, bringing the character’s tragedy to a climax. But I do not do it. In an instant, I was my brother’s brother again, asked to do scenes, and went back to providing first aid.
– In search of Ru, why are you paying?
– I’m also about to reach middle age, the execution period. Chest it is a time of youth. The only thing that changes is the economy. After the short film 16:30I received a lot of invitations to collaborate, but I had to push them all to focus Chest. I don’t have enough time to undertake other projects and earn money to support my family. I can’t help my brother study abroad.
Doing ChestYou and I just want to have the “quirk” satisfied, without thinking about how good it gets, how it will show up at international film festivals. You see, Saigon rained heavily this afternoon, probably one of the biggest rains since the start of the season. While filming we had to wait two and a half months for it to rain for a 45 second flooded scene. It is not passion, nobody will go crazy doing those things.
– Why did you choose the boys’ story as a “trigger”?
– I see a special destiny in the group of people who specialize in “trigger” problems – giving numerical advice to the players. With Rom, a boy who lost his parents from an early age, collected every change to find his family, he had to sell his luck to others to increase the hope of meeting his relatives again. Luck in business – Your own risk is very different from many labor sales jobs, such as lottery ticket sales, confectionery … Although the probability is extremely small, you are determined to do it.
From a very young age I have been in contact with the guys who sold lottery tickets. My childhood were the days when I loved playing video games instead of studying. My father owns an auto repair shop, one afternoon I’m going to help him earn more. Many days the store is inactive, and I and the kids from the store wander the market selling tickets. For me, it is an experience, for the children, it is a temporary sustenance. Their hard but colorful lives are memories that follow me all the time, becoming an engine for making movies.
– What are your expectations about the income of the film?
Speaking of profit and loss, for the past eight years, no one on the team has thought about the sales story, the sole purpose is that the movie should be finished. As a manager, I understand how much effort people put into money. When requesting financing for the making of films, we were convinced by the belief of a Vietnamese film, because the investors themselves did not think about recovering profits. History Chest Labeled as “rescuing the Vietnamese box office” after a period of time due to translation, it is so great for us. I just care Chest Stand in any position in the audience. That can only be determined when the film closes, ending its final screening.
