Last weekend, when the mainstream American media predicted Biden’s election, all eyes were on the director of the United States Public Service Agency (GSA), Mrs. Emily W. Murphy.
Ms. Murphy is not a family figure, but she is the one in charge of officially confirming Biden’s victory in the election, on behalf of the Trump administration.
To do this, Ms. Murphy must sign a letter to “open” the vault for Biden’s transition team. This marked the Trump administration’s first official recognition that Biden had, in fact, won the election. The letter will also give Biden’s team access to national security tools to streamline background checks and spend money training new hires.
Yet days after many newspapers predicted Biden’s election, Murphy has yet to sign his secretary.
A spokesperson for GSA declined to provide information on when the agency began the transition. This is a clear sign that the GSA will not “take the light ahead,” because Trump has yet to admit that he lost.
Two US administration officials say the GSA’s delay has sounded alarm bells to Biden’s allies that the transition is likely to be much more difficult than Biden had thought.
Last weekend, Biden told his allies that he wanted to give Republicans and President Trump some time to accept the election results.
Meanwhile, a presidential aide said Trump was slowly realizing that he was practically losing and had started arguing with his aides about the prospects of running in 2024.
In previous elections, the administration of the incumbent president generally signed the change of power several hours after the press predicted a winner.
This is always done quickly, said one GSA expert.
When Trump won in 2016, the Obama administration signed his secretary a day later.
In 2008, the letter was signed on election night, around 1 a.m.
The only time the secretariat was delayed was in 2000, when Florida was forced to count. Therefore, the clerk is signed the day after the Supreme Court rendered its final verdict.
David Barram, who once led the GSA under President Clinton, said this year’s elections were very different.
“All the newspapers predict that Mr. Biden will win the election. So I think it’s clear who the winner is. But I sympathize with Emily Murphy and trust that she will do the right thing. “
Earlier, in early September, the Trump administration signed three documents with Biden’s team, as defined in the Presidential Transition Act.
At that time, $ 9.62 million had been allocated to Biden’s transition team to perform pre-election services.
Once Ms. Murphy officially writes, an additional $ 9.9 million will be “released”, including $ 6.3 million for the next administration and $ 1 million. for orientation – staff training.
