The money to relocate the Quan Vu statue is almost equal to the construction money, which many people criticize the government for wasting – Screenshot
“If Guan Yu had such a large amount of money in his hand, he would definitely not lose Jingzhou,” Professor Zhou Xuanyi of Wuhan University in Hubei Province said angrily on Chinese social network Weibo. .
It is unclear what the relocation cost will be. According to the newspaper South China morning post, the policy and construction costs are borne by the Kinh Chau city government (also in Hubei).
According to the relocation plan, the Quan Vu statue will be moved to a location about 8 km from its current location. This is where it is rumored to be the site for the Three Kingdoms era general’s military training. A Hubei official said the relocation would begin soon.
According to Chinese state media, the Quan Vu monument is 58 m high, made entirely of bronze, and weighs more than 1,200 tons. This super giant project was built by the Kinh Chau city government in Hubei province to “attract tourists.”
A Kinh Chau official admitted that the Guan Yu monument was built at a time when Chinese towns rushed to build “super huge” structures. The Kinh Chau government also wanted something to make a mark and attract visitors, so it spent 173 million yuan (more than 600 billion dong) to build.
3 years passed, until 2016, the new project was completed and placed in a cultural park in the city. However, the Hubei province government expressed dissatisfaction with the monument. In 2019, the Hubei construction management agency confirmed that the Quan Vu statue was built “illegally.”
The relocation of the Guan Yu statue is part of the Beijing government’s long-standing efforts to renovate the city and allow locals to “compete with the monument.” Many buildings with peculiar architecture, even somewhat sensitive ones, sprouted like mushrooms throughout China during this period.
The Beijing government later ordered a “reconstruction” to include the Guan Yu monument in Jingzhou. In its conclusion in November 2020, China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development emphasized that “this is a waste of money” and destroyed the surrounding landscape and historical elements of Kinh Chau. .
Guan Yu was a general who followed Liu Bei during the Three Kingdoms period. He was famous for his simple personality, good at martial arts, for which he achieved many victories and was assigned to defend Kinh Chau. He died in 220 while defending Jingzhou Castle. Later people worship him, adore him and call him Quan Thanh De Quan or Quan Cong.
