In a statement dated Dec. 22, the White House said President Trump ordered a full amnesty for 15 people and reduced the sentence in whole or in part for another five.
Notably, George Papadopoulos (33), a former Trump campaign policy advisor in 2016, was fully pardoned. Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about his connections to the Russians in 2017.
Former adviser Papadopoulos served 12 days with a 14-day sentence in federal prison, then was released but was monitored for 12 months.
“Today’s amnesty helps correct a mistake that the investigative team led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller has caused many people,” according to the White House statement.
Mueller’s investigative report has no evidence to support the allegation of conspiracy to collude between the Trump election campaign and Russia, but found the party had many connections. President Trump repeatedly criticized the investigation as a politically motivated “witch hunt” to reduce its credibility.
Trump also ordered a full amnesty for lawyer Alex van der Zwaan (36), the Dutch son-in-law of Russian billionaire German Khan. Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in prison and fined $ 20,000 for lying in the Mueller investigation.
The White House said the four men deserve a pardon because they are veterans “with a long history of service to the country.” There are also 3 former Republicans on the amnesty list.
President Trump has insisted so far that he won the January 3 grand election, repeatedly raising accusations of popular vote fraud. At the same time, Trump filed lawsuits aimed at overturning the election results, but without success.
