Patient 1823 in Me Linh, Hanoi, has not made much progress after 1 month of hospitalization, 3 weeks of ECMO on.
According to Dr. Dong Phu Khiem, deputy director of the Department of Active Rehabilitation of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, patient 1823 (65 years old, in Me Linh, Hanoi) has very severe lung damage. In terms of images on CT scans, the patient’s lung damage can reach 95%, almost all of his lungs.
The patient still lives completely dependent on ECMO (artificial cardiopulmonary system), the assessment has not improved fundamentally.
Patient 1823 is F1 from case 1725, announced as positive for SARS-CoV-2 by the Ministry of Health today 1/2. Shortly thereafter, the patient was transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment. In mid-February, the patient had to intervene with ECMO due to his serious condition.
Dr. Dong Phu Khiem said that the patient’s condition in 1823 had not improved much after a long period of treatment. The patient has a very high prognosis, if a ventilator is not maintained, ECMO will not save life.
However, the patient still has a chance to recover. This is not unexpected for the world nor does it compare to the Covid-19 cases previously received by the hospital.
“This may take longer. There are cases of severe lung damage, even if the body gains the virus, the lungs take a long time to recover. For example, Patient 91 or Patient 19 have injuries. The lung injury is very severe, take up to 6-8 weeks to gradually stabilize, “said the doctor.
In the coming time, physicians will continue to support ECMO to sustain life for patients. At the same time, take intensive respiratory care, hoping that the damage to the lungs will subside. “Once the concentration of the virus decreases, the patient’s lung damage can improve,” said Dr. Khiem.
In the past, unusually severe Covid-19 patients often had multiple underlying diseases, making treatment difficult. With patient 1823, the doctor evaluated that the factors related to background blood pressure, diabetes, … have been controlled very well.
Also, in addition to severely damaged lungs, other functions such as the patient’s heart, kidneys, and liver are basically relatively good.
Currently, patient 1823 has mixed positive and negative test results for SARS-CoV-2 multiple times. Doctors explain that the patient’s body has a very low threshold for viral flow, but a negative and then positive test again could be due to the presence of remnants of the virus or other reasons.
