A senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) was killed in a drone strike near the Iraq-Syria border on Sunday night.

According to local media, the main IRGC commander Muslim Shahdan and three escorts were killed after their car was attacked by a drone near the border.

Before being ambushed, Shahdan was traveling from Iraq to Syria through the Al Qaim border gate.

The armed vehicle was hit as soon as it entered Syrian territory.

There are several reports that the bodies of the victims were transferred to the Iraqi capital by the Iranian-backed paramilitary group.

This information has not yet been confirmed by Tehran.

The attack comes just two days after top Iranian nuclear expert Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was shot dead north of the capital Tehran on Friday.

Iranian officials blamed Israel for the murder.

Speaking at Fakhrizadeh’s funeral on Monday, Iran’s Defense Minister General Amir Hatami claimed that Tehran would retaliate.

Earlier on January 3, the US military assassinated General Iran Qassem Soleimani with a drone shortly after he left Baghdad airport.

The incident increased tensions between Tehran and Washington, and Iran retaliated by launching a series of attacks against US forces in Iraq.
