Former Hanoi President Nguyen Duc Chung, 53, and three former police officers were found guilty of seizing classified documents from the Nhat Cuong case.
On the morning of December 11, after a 4-hour closed-door trial, the Hanoi People’s Court sentenced Chung to 5 years in prison for a crime. Seize secret state documents, pursuant to article 337 of the Penal Code of 2015.
With the same crime, Pham Quang Dung (former Police Department officer investigating economic crimes, corruption, smuggling – C03, Ministry of Public Security) received 4 years and 6 months in prison; Nguyen Hoang Trung (Mr. Chung’s driver) was sentenced to 2 years in prison and Nguyen Anh Ngoc (46, former official of the Hanoi People’s Committee office) 18 months in prison.
Trung is a former Hanoi police officer; Ngoc is a former deputy chief of the Cau Giay district police and was assigned to work in the Hanoi People’s Committee Office.
The sentence does not establish the civil part or the additional punishment, said lawyer Ngo Kim Lan, defended by the defendant Dung.
Lawyer Giang Hong Thanh, defender of the defendant Trung, said in court that 4 defendants admitted to having committed a crime. Mr. Chung and three accomplices were able to apply the facts and this was one of the bases for the court to declare the sentence under pain of accusation.
Due to his poor health, Mr. Chung was allowed to sit down to answer questions. The former president of Hanoi declared the mastermind, as he accused the content. “In his last words, Mr. Chung apologized to the Party, the state and the voters for losing faith,” said lawyer Thanh.
According to the indictment, Mr. Chung and his wife are individuals with related rights and obligations in the case that occurred at the Nhat Cuong Company, the great failure of the Central Steering Committee to control and lead the fight against corruption. Knowing that Dung was recruited to participate in the investigation of this case, he asked to collect and “collect information on the direction of the investigation.”
With 5 times to seize 9 confidential documents, Dung passed Mr. Chung twice with 6 documents. Trung and Anh Ngoc were accused of once participating in the printing and editing of three confidential documents for Mr. Chung.
