Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Germany to impose tougher measures when deaths in Germany due to Covid-19 record a record of nearly 600 people in one day.
Merkel said instructions were agreed upon by the leaders of 16 states in Germany two weeks ago to allow stores to open, but banning eating in restaurants is not enough.
“When hot bars and waffles are set up, they don’t match what we agreed to only allow food and drink to go sales,” Merkel said in an earlier speech. Parliament on December 9, mentioned that some restaurants set up outdoor stands. Although they do not violate the aforementioned regulations, the stalls are considered potentially infectious because many people have stood in long lines to wait for a purchase.
Germany, a country of 83 million people, recorded almost 1.22 million cases, of which almost 20,000 people died. Germany’s National Center for Diseases, the Robert Koch Institute, reported 590 deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, 100 more than the previous record per week. They found 20,815 new infections a day, compared with 17,270 a week earlier.
“I am very sorry, but if we have to pay the price of 590 deaths in one day, I find it unacceptable,” Merkel said. “We are in a critical phase to combat the pandemic. The numbers are too high.”
Germany in the spring avoids the same high number of infections and deaths as in other major European countries. They still have much lower mortality rates than in countries like the UK, France or Spain.
But recent figures are not so positive. According to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Germany in the last 14 days was higher than in France, Belgium, Spain and on par with the United Kingdom, although even more lower than in Italy and Sweden. and many other countries.
Merkel mentioned that scientists from the Leopoldina Academy on December 8 recommended that Germans reduce social exposure starting next week and impose strict restrictions from Christmas Eve until January 10. Merkel urged state authorities to consider closing schools before Christmas. “We will take what the scientists say very seriously,” Merkel said.
