Many questions about cross-cow farming: the project cow is sick, the cow is strong and healthy - Photo 1.

On October 3, back in Bac Ray 2 village (Phuoc Binh commune, Bac Ai district, Ninh Thuan province), where 11 F1 and F2 gaurs are raised, we noticed that the crossbred cow had been fattened. regain health after days of starvation and exhaustion.

This is owned by the scientific research project “Exploitation and development of rare cow genetic resources in the forest area adjacent to 3 provinces of Ninh Thuan – Lam Dong – Khanh Hoa” (hereinafter the project) of the Application Center. Lam Dong Province Science – Technology (Science and Technology) is chaired, Mr. Le Xuan Tham (former director of Lam Dong Province Science and Technology Department) is in charge of the issue.

Farmers are different

Those responsible had received 24-hour explanations about the status of the project’s herd of cows after images of them were revealed in the media. To find out the fact, people just have to look for gaurs on the same lot owned and bred by Mr. Nguyen Van Chuan (who lives in Phuoc Binh commune, Bac Ai district) owned and raised in a … nearby.

According to our research, from 2009 to 2012, a wild gaur (F0) went on to mate with domestic cows, giving birth to more than 20 F1 gaurs. In 2012, the project acquired 10 F1 cross gaurs (5 males and 5 females). The remaining F1 players, people have sold many places to merchants, only Mr. Chuan’s family has 2 men and women. Of these 2 cows they continue to mate with domestic cows to produce 2 cross F2 gaurs, including 1 male and 1 female. Currently, the F3 cross bull has appeared at Mr. Chuan’s house and it is a bull.

Mr. Chuan’s herds of cows currently graze in the garden area. At first glance, F1 bulls and cows are also unusually large and strong with domestic cows. Horns, hooves, and physique cannot be mixed with regional breeds. The two F1 cows were ferocious, so Mr. Chuan had to use an anchor to the stake. When the stranger approached, the bull jumped up as if to attack.

The most striking thing for us is the Gaur F3 crossbreed because it looks more like the domestic bull than the gaur. Project monitoring personnel confirmed that it is an F3, which was recorded in the subject’s acceptance report. This F3 only has 12.5% of the gaur’s bloodline (F0).

Mr. Chuan said that taking care of the cross-bred cows was nothing special compared to the domestic cows, but he fed more grass, pellets and fermented grass. During the changing seasons, he bought commercially available vitamins and minerals at veterinary pharmacies to give gaurs as a supplement to prevent disease. “Raising them is not difficult, just the most extreme thing is to build fences carefully to avoid being robbed, as well as breaking the fence and leaving or going out to kill cows,” Chuan said.

Project failed?

Looking back at the project’s herd of cows, it can’t be helped. A herd of 11 cows, including 10 F1 (5 males, 5 females) bought in 2010 and 1 F2 (the son of male number 3 in the herd mated with local cows) were kept in a stable of just over 500m2. In the herd there are 3 sick and bony animals, 5 are in better condition but the hips and buttocks are completely exposed to the bones, 2 of them are the male male and the female is strong and aggressive, but the hips have revealed a bit of bone. The F2 cow is yellow, has a small body like a domestic cow and is pregnant.

After receiving adequate feed, eating fresh grass, fermented grass and pellets in the last few days, the cows show signs of alert, moving from side to side in the barn area, some appear aggressive. competing for food.

This herd of cows is so exhausted that when the project ends (June 2019), the parties (Lam Dong and Ninh Thuan Provincial People’s Committees) have agreed on the policy of delivering and receiving cows but later. It has not been deployed for a year and there is no funding to continue nurturing.

The aforementioned national project was funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology for 2.5 billion VND, the two Departments of Science and Technology of Ninh Thuan Province and Lam Dong Province contributed 700 million VND for its implementation. The project officially ended in June 2019 and began to take over. The Ministry of Science and Technology, by accepting and accepting, evaluated the project to complete the scientific objective: to preserve the rare and precious hybrid genetic source of gaur – domestic cattle and to create a premise to improve the quality of domestic cows in terms of capacity. and meat quality. meat.

However, when looking at the number of cross-cow development, the results of this project are very limited. Initially, the project expects 10 F1 cows to develop a herd of 40 cows, including 5 males. This target is set to… 3 thereafter and the number of F2 males is set to… 1. Even the F2 that the project owns is the mating product of the F1 male (number 3) with the domestic cow of the local population and acquired by part of the project. Not to mention that most of the F1 bulls (except one crossed with domestic cows with results) in the project so far have been immature.

From this perspective, it can be seen that the project has not created a herd with advantages over domestic cows.

He will consult experts from the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden.

According to the representative of the Phuoc Binh National Park (Ninh Thuan province), this unit has prepared an area of forest to raise cows in a semi-natural way. Regarding moving the cows to a new place, Mr. Nguyen Cong Van – Director of Phuoc Binh National Park – said that after receiving it, he would consult experts from Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden (Ho Chi Minh City) to choose the safe choice.
