At a press conference on April 21, Canh Sang said the Chinese delegation to the UN last Friday sent diplomatic notes to Secretary General Antonio Guterres, reiterating his sovereignty.
China’s April 17 note said that Vietnam “illegally dispatched invaders and occupied islands and rocks of China’s Nansha Islands in an attempt to create a dispute.”
The note said that Beijing repeatedly “opposed the invasion and illegal occupation of Vietnam” and asked Vietnam “to remove all people, media and equipment from the invaded islands and rocks and illegal occupation.”
This action in response to Vietnam in late March sent a note to the UN to affirm sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly islands.
China names dozens of islands and entities in the East Sea
On April 19, the Chinese People’s Ministry announced a “standard title” for 25 islands, reefs and 55 underwater geographic features in the South China Sea.
Most of these are on the Paracel and Spratly islands.
China also announces the longitude and latitude of the islands, rocks, and features.
Vietnam said that these entities have banks located in the depths of Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, which is less than 60 nautical miles from the Vietnamese coast or about 50 nautical miles from the Vietnamese baseline.
Just one day ago, April 18, the Chinese media reported that China had decided to establish the so-called “Xisha district” and the “Nansha district” under the “city of Sansha”.
This is the “administrative unit” that China established in 2012 to administer “Xisha, Zhongsha, and Nansha.”
On April 19, Vietnamese foreign spokesman Le Thi Thu Hang spoke out against China, announcing the establishment of “Xisha and” Nansha County.
“Vietnam has repeatedly asserted that Vietnam has sufficient historical evidence and legal grounds to assert sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly islands.
Vietnam’s constant stance strongly opposes the establishment of the so-called “Tam Sa City” and related acts due to a serious, invalid and unreasonable violation of the sovereignty of Vietnam. Recognizing, it is not conducive to friendly relations between nations and complicates the situation in the East Sea, the region and the world, “said Hang.
On April 20, from Beijing, spokesman Canh Shuang replied that the establishment of administrative units in the country was “sovereign”.
“China is resolutely opposed to Vietnam’s words and actions that harm China’s sovereignty and interests in Nanhai,” Canh Sang said.
Returning to the last press conference on April 21, the state newspaper CGTN quoted Mr. Canh Sang:
“Any country’s attempt to violate China’s sovereignty and interests in the South China Sea and claim illegal sovereignty will be in vain.”
In recent statements to the BBC, Vietnamese observers believe that China is making many firm attempts at the South China Sea.
From the School of Law, National University City. Ho Chi Minh, researcher Hoang Viet on April 17 commented:
“In fact, Vietnam also has many ambitions during ASEAN’s rotating presidency, in which Vietnam also wants to promote its role and courage, as well as speed up the process of finding a good COC.” Ministry of conduct in the South China Sea.
“But the difficulty is that even in this Covid-19 epidemic, the limited meeting of the parties also greatly reduced Vietnam’s role in the presidency, and whether there was agreement from other countries.” in this block or not
“Therefore, Vietnam must show its bravery and its role in the South China Sea dispute, but a second problem is the challenge of solidarity in the bloc, so the problem remains very difficult.”
