To prevent the rise of COVID-19, Korea will intensify rigorous testing and tracking.

According to a Reuters source, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported 615 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 6.12 midnight. During a month of registering new cases every day in three numbers, South Korea saw a record 8,311 patients confirmed in quarantine, the largest number ever recorded.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday ordered the government to mobilize all available resources to track cases and increase evidence by deploying troops and personnel from public authorities. According to Green House spokesperson Chung Man-ho at the press conference.

President Mon Jae-in added that test sites should operate longer hours to make it more convenient for people to work and that more test facilities should be established for car drivers.

According to the KDCA, the most recent test positive rate was approximately 4.2%, compared to an annual average of 1.2%.

KDCA Deputy Director Na Seong-woong said that starting next week, testing centers will begin using test kits that collect saliva samples, a new design for user convenience. The centers will also begin using antigen tests, which are believed to detect viral proteins.

Na predicts that daily COVID-19 cases in Korea will fluctuate between 550 and 750 this week, and could skyrocket to 900 a day next week.

“This crisis is the most severe,” he said, warning that the outbreak could lead to a “medical collapse” if the rising numbers are not controlled.

In total, South Korea reported 38,161 COVID-19 cases and 549 deaths.
