The training exercises: the team and soccer are very presented in theory and difficult to understand with first graders, who are still learning letters – Photo: HT

In June this year, when the public was discussing the chosen specialized school, on his Facebook, Vietnam’s youngest professor, Phan Thanh Son Nam (Polytechnic University of Ho Chi Minh City) gave 5 suggestions. redesign teaching and learning in secondary schools.

At the top of Professor Nam’s 5 suggestions are: “Teach kids lots of gymnastics, swimming, soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field … The more they know about the sport, the better, it’s not just teaching. but practice regularly.

Living half my life, I must be number one in my health, without good health, the fame of a famous and famous career will lose meaning.

Similarly, a famous startup called Nam Do also spoke about 3 weaknesses of Vietnamese when they go abroad to work or study, including health. Not having enough health is difficult to achieve, whether at school or at work.

Therefore, in education, it is determined that three pillars of equal importance are education – ethics – fitness. Within the scope of the sports page, we would just like to talk about gymnastics in Vietnamese schools.

Expectation on “Kite” …

It must be said immediately that, in principle, Vietnam does not take sport lightly in schools. Therefore, in the Education Law, physical education is a compulsory subject from 1st to 12th grade.

Although it is a compulsory subject and is considered to bring health and enthusiasm to students, in fact, this subject is always overlooked and students complain that it is boring. This boredom has been analyzed many times, for two related reasons: poor facilities and too much theoretical learning.

When I started working on articles about school sports, I heard countless complaints from students.

The children were tired of learning gymnastics but they only sat in the room to listen and record the story of the high jump: from what year to year, did they jump scissors, then jump with their stomachs over the bar. Then the most modern dance style in use has returned to the bar!

Or learn badminton, how is the rotation of the wrist, the strength of the wrist; athletics and athletics, running a rocky leg; Learn to swim, then sit back and “sing” that there are four types of swimming, including butterfly, frog, freestyle, backstroke, but never get in the water!

So when I hear the story of the group that wrote the “Kite” series pursuing one goal of innovation, like many others, I expect a real change in the teaching and learning of gymnastics.

In particular, when the title policy also changed, it was no longer an “exercise” book as before, but “physical education”, because there was not only movement, but also knowledge about nutrition and health …

… And disappointment!

I have fully contemplated the first grade Physical Education book in the 95 page “Kite” series with three main parts.

The first is the General Knowledge section with content on cleaning training fields and preparing training equipment.

The second is the basic movement section with 3 topics, where topic 1 includes 4 exercises on team building, topic 2 consists of 7 exercises focused on exercises, and topic 3 has 4 lessons. on basic posture and motor skills.

Finally, the third part, the main part, deals with Optional Sports with two mini-football (6 cards) and basketball (6 cards).

Of course, having been called a textbook is intended for students. Also, in the introduction, people advise: “Put this book away carefully, do not write, draw or color the pages.”

But it’s hard to imagine first graders (6 years old) “digesting” the content of the book. Composers probably know difficult words in the book like “team building”, “rhythm”, “basic movement”, “elective sports”, “voice commands” … They should devote an entire page to terminology explanation.

However, after reading the explain page, you may need to add one more explain page! For example, the explanation of the word “voice command” is a chant in sports.

I submitted the link to see the textbook of Ngoc Tam, former national high jump athlete, currently very successful at Bang Tam Height Development Center. Tam has a master’s degree in physical training and sports, has many years of experience in working and training children.

After looking at the book, Tam commented, “The requirements in the book are too high for first graders to meet.” In particular, speaking for a while, Tam “recoiled” when she learned that this was a student book, while she thought it was for the teacher!

Ngoc Tam believes that the content of the book is completely unreal. “With many years of experience in motor training for children, I believe that at least third grade students can use this first grade book – says Mind – Each class in my center, one teacher will be responsible for a maximum of 15 children, while in public schools it will be 40-50 students / teacher.

When we receive a child of about 6 years old, our coach must speak with the parents for at least 1 hour to get to know the student. Then there are the sessions that also require parents to practice together. Just like that to achieve efficiency. So I don’t think the textbook I saw is as effective as I expected. 9-year-olds cannot afford soccer elective drills!

As mentioned above, the third part of the Grade 1 Physical Education textbook is optional sports, with mini soccer and basketball.

I asked Mr. N., an elementary school gym teacher with more than 20 years of experience and owner of a fairly successful youth soccer training center (N. asked not to name because he didn’t want problems with the education sector) an appraisal of reading books.

He laughed and said, “I don’t need to read by heart anymore, because I’ve had a week of training with this book and I’m using it to teach at school.”

N. said: “I am also disappointed in the book. The gymnastics book has been criticized for being heavy and the new book is even heavier.

For example, earlier in the team building section, students only asked students to distinguish between left and right; while in the new book, you must master the movements of left, right, back to back.

I think the imposition in this book is heavier than before. When participating in the training course, many teachers also commented, disagreed on many points, but nothing was done ”.

As for mini football, N. he laughed out loud and said: “People made terrible requests in the book and I think only a soccer prodigy could do it.

For example, lesson 18 asks students they already know to stop the ball with the soles of their feet, lesson 19 is to dribble with the soles of their feet, lesson 20 is to kick the ball with the soles of their feet, lesson 21 kick the ball with the soles of the foot towards the goal.

I affirm that no six-year-old can do these exercises. At youth soccer training centers, 6- to 8-year-olds simply meet, play, and chase the ball. Exercises of such skill are only 9 years old to begin and only those who have a real talent for soccer can do it ”.

Speaking of physical education lessons, I spoke with a former colleague who works in Singapore and has his first child in primary school there.

He said, “In grades 1 and 2, he just played on the grass and sand court and of course there was a teacher watching. I saw that they mainly encouraged the kids to be active. A list of sports for the students to discuss. and choose My son chooses to study tennis.

From time to time, a teacher takes the students registered to learn tennis to a specialized tennis center for them to learn. I found that my son enjoyed and improved significantly after one year of school. In particular, I have never seen a physical education textbook.

Do you need elementary physical education books?

Exactly a year ago, before the “Kite” textbook series came out, when talking about physical education books, many experts said that it is not necessary to have textbooks for students but only need Teacher’s books are enough.

Supporting this view is Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong, Vice President of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Study. Mr. Dong believes that physical training is a motor oriented subject and does not need textbooks for students.

Most countries also do not have textbooks on physical education, but only curricula and training programs. Particularly in Japan, there are but also only from high school.

The first grade Physical Education textbook written by the Creative Horizons group also follows the same schedule, with almost no difference. As for the optional sports section, the Creative Skyline book opts for aerobics and soccer.

However, Creative Skyline is simple and may be appropriate for 6-year-olds. In football, for example, there are no requirements such as “ball soles”, “dribbling with the soles”, just blocking and dribbling.
