On the morning of September 18, Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital said that two young men who were poisoned with mud snails and toothed mud snails have just been discharged from the hospital.
Two patients who have just been discharged from the hospital are Mr. Ho Van N. (21 years old, Van Thanh commune, Van Ninh district), Mr. Tran Quoc T. (22 years old, Van Khanh commune, Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa).
Before that, around 9 a.m. on September 11, a group of 3 young people who went fishing in the waters of the Van Ninh district, caught a bag of sea snails. In the afternoon of the same day, the group took the boiled snail to eat and, more than 30 minutes after eating, they suddenly had nausea, headache, dizziness, numbness of lips, numbness of hands …
On the evening of the same day, Nguyen Van T. (23, Van Gia City, Van Ninh District) died before being taken to hospital. The remaining 2 youths were taken to the emergency room of the Anti-Poison Active Recovery Department of Khanh Hoa Province General Hospital.
Regarding this poisoning incident, the Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography has identified from 30 sea snails collected from the previous poisoning, there are 29 individuals belonging to the serrated snail species (the scientific name Nassarius papillosus) and one individual of the shiny muddy snail ( Nassarius glans).
All specimens of two species of muddy snails contain tetrodotoxin (neurotoxin) with high toxicity, 21.7 to 77.7 times higher than the limit allowed for marine food safety. Eating just the 5-10 individuals listed above is estimated to be enough to cause fatal poisoning for ordinary people.
According to the Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography, tetrodotoxin has heat and acid resistant properties, so it does not degrade or denature at high temperatures during processing. As a result, toxins can exist in processed, fried, or frozen canned food products.
