The results of the genetic sequencing of “patient 2229” (the Japanese died in Hanoi), infected with the nCoV variant of group 20C, appeared for the first time in Vietnam.

Online meeting with the Permanent Government of the Government with the National Steering Committee for the prevention of Covid-19 on the morning of February 24, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long said the above information.

According to Minister Long, this strain of virus circulates mainly in Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and India. The rate of this strain is not high, but the degree of increase in virulence is unknown.

Therefore, this is the fifth strain of the nCoV strain registered in Vietnam since the middle of last year until now. Four strains of the nCoV strain previously recognized by Vietnam, derived from the original Wuhan, include British, South African, Rwandan African, and a G mutation (Da Nang epidemic July-August 2020).

In addition, the healthcare sector analyzed and isolated 28 patient samples from Hai Duong and 8 samples from Quang Ninh were all British strains. However, there is a sample of patients in Hai Duong city who reported being infected with the South African strain. The health sector is conducting extensive genetic testing to see why this strain is available in Hai Duong City.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam also commented that there is now a growing situation of nCoV variants in Vietnam.

“Already in Hai Duong there have been two variations, which requires being always alert,” said the deputy prime minister.

Experts around the world always warn that although the number of people infected with Covid-19 is drastically decreasing, the epidemic can completely break out because so many strains are appearing.
