The new submarine is believed to be part of Japan’s effort to improve maritime security, as China expands its influence in the region.
Follow Japan Times, the launch of a new Japanese submarine named Taigei took place today October 14 at the Kobe shipyard. This 3,000-ton ship was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The Taigei train is 84 m long, 9 m wide and costs $ 720 million to build. The ship can carry crews of up to 70 people and is equipped with lithium-ion batteries to allow it to operate underwater for longer than previous models.
Taigei is expected to enter service in March 2022, becoming the 22nd ship in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s submarine fleet.
According to the 2020 Defense Program Guidelines, Japan aims to increase the number of submarines in service from 16 to 22, as China increases its presence in regional waters.
Japan currently operates nine Oyashio-class submarines with a tonnage of 2,750 tons and 11 Soryu-class warships with a tonnage of 2,950 tons. The launch of the twelfth Soryu-class warship is scheduled for next year. The Taigei submarine was the first of the Taigei class, after the Oyashio and Soryu class ships.
