Iran’s IRNA news agency announced: “The government agreed to pay $ 150,000 or a corresponding amount in euros for each family of the victims of the plane crash in Ukraine as soon as possible.”

“This compensation does not prevent the investigation of the criminal element of the case in the competent judiciary,” said IRNA.

Many of the victims were Iranians and Canadians. Specifically, 85 people are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, some of whom have dual citizenship.

Iran’s Civil Aviation Authority said that improperly adjusting an air defense unit’s radar system was “human error” that essentially led to the tragedy of the Ukrainian airline’s mistaken shooting.

Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down shortly after taking off from Tehran airport on January 8, killing all 176 people on it.

Three days after the tragedy, the Iranian government admitted that the military had mistakenly fired a Boeing 737-800 after launching two missiles. The incident occurred amid heightened tension between the United States and Iran over the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by the United States.
