BelgiumVerviers officials found a box containing the heart of Pierre David, the city’s first mayor, in a fountain named after him.
Authorities said on September 1 that the heart was discovered on August 20 during the renovation of a fountain in the center of the city of Verviers, east of Liège province, about 100 km from Brussels. The heart is housed in a rusty metal box, which will be on display at the local art museum until September 20. The box has not been opened yet.
The discovery of David’s heart confirmed that the story passed from generation to generation in Verviers, saying that when David died, his heart was placed in the town hall and then placed in a fountain.
“With great respect and professionalism, the staff have worked to preserve one of our heritage,” Verviers City Council member Christine Magis posted on Facebook, referring to standard museum staff. It was put on display for the heart of the late Mayor David.
David was the first mayor of the city of Verviers after the Belgian revolution of 1830. He held the leadership of the city until his death in 1839.
