The AFP news agency quoted a local government statement emphasizing that the players’ New Year’s party is illegal, in violation of the government’s anti-COVID-19 epidemic decree.

France has issued a nationwide curfew, prohibiting people from gathering and leaving their homes after 8 o’clock, including on New Year’s Eve. Some 132,000 police officers were mobilized to supervise the execution of the curfew.

However, due to the meager force, the Lieuron commune police were completely defenseless in front of the crowd of players from all over France. What worries the authorities is that among the participants were Great Britain, where a new variant of the coronavirus is raging, and Spain.

A man named Jo in eastern France said the entire meeting was in a shopping mall parking lot. Once crowded, the convoy began to approach the Lieuron commune and go through police checkpoints.

The party started on December 31st on New Years Eve in an abandoned warehouse. When the police approached and asked to disband, the crowd became angry and protested. At least 4 police cars were burned or damaged, many officers were injured by being run over by bottles and pebbles from some aggressive hands.

The police then had to back off to call, but the loudspeaker seemed overwhelmed by the music. After two days of play, the crowd began to disperse unaware that the police had placed their nets on the perimeter.

Written on Twitter on February 2, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said he arrested five people and prosecuted the illegal assembly case, in violation of the government’s anti-epidemic decree. More than 1,200 people were “questioned” by the police and announced the punishment after leaving the party.

According to Darmanin, the crowd dissolved due to the crowded police presence around the warehouse. There were no violent clashes between the two parties after the incident.

With the highest number of COVID-19 infections in Western Europe, France is stepping up measures to limit the spread, including the imposition of earlier curfews in 15 regions in the northeast and southeast. Starting on February 1, the curfew in these areas will begin at 6 pm instead of 8:00 pm in other regions.
