According to the newspaper guardian On November 5, the bill aims to protect the former Russian president from criminal prosecution against any violation in his life. A consensus majority of the deputies is required to revoke this shield.

Before that, former Russian presidents were only exempt from prosecution for actions while in office.

The law is expected to pass the Russian House of Representatives and Senate before being transferred to President Vladimir Putin for enactment.

Putin also pushed for a law last weekend that would allow the former Russian president to serve as a senator for life, a position that is also exempt from prosecution, sparking debate over his imminent retirement.

Russia recently revised the Constitution on presidential term limits, allowing current President Putin to have two more terms and in power until 2036. Putin stressed that previous amendments are necessary to ensure Russia’s “stability, security and prosperity” in the future.

Putin’s current term ends in 2024.

In addition to Putin, another former Russian president who will also benefit from the previous bills is Dmitry Medvedev, who assumed the presidency between 2008 and 2012.
