Millions of people in Vietnam are facing a “deadly husband disaster” as the country, which was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, is now facing the worst flooding in decades, the Red Cross said.
This month’s floods and landslides have killed more than 100 people, including many soldiers, and left dozens more missing.
“Everywhere we looked, houses, roads and infrastructure were submerged,” the Red Cross said in a statement.
Vietnam has been hit hard by heavy rains in recent weeks.
The rains are expected to continue falling in the coming days, raising fears that flooding will continue to increase.
“These are the worst floods in decades,” said Vietnam Red Cross President Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu.
“It seriously affected the lives of millions of people, who were already in trouble due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”
So far, the floods have left at least 178,000 homes submerged in water, crops destroyed and almost 700,000 head of livestock and poultry have been killed or washed away.
“We are doing everything we can to quickly get relief supplies to people by ship, by air and by land, including food, clean water, raincoats and other essentials,” said Dr. Thu. additional.
The International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) says hundreds of thousands of people in Vietnam urgently need shelter, clean water and food to prevent the outbreak of a larger-scale humanitarian crisis.
“These floods are a drop of water and will bring millions to the brink of poverty,” said the Red Cross official.
The International Federation added that the organization has so far provided some US $ 325,000 in emergency aid.
