Prolonged heavy rains and many discharges of hydroelectric power caused the water levels in Thua Thien Hue to rise rapidly, causing local flooding in many residential areas.
On the morning of October 9, floodwater from the Huong River quickly poured over the Da Dam in central Hue city. The water flowed rapidly, so the authorities blocked this area, preventing the passage of people. According to local people, years of experience show that when the water overflows from the Da dam, “Hue has floods.”
Flood water from the Huong River flooded the road through Bao Vinh Old Town in Huong Vinh Commune (Huong Tra City) 30 to 40 cm; water flooded people’s houses on both sides of the road.
After Huong Dien Hydroelectric Power Station increased flood discharge to 1008 m3 / s, Ta Trach Lake to 409 m3 / s, downstream Bo, Huong River in Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Tra districts were heavily flooded . . In which, Quang Thanh commune (Quang Dien district) was more deeply flooded, currently the route through this commune was flooded 80 cm, flood water flooded the commune headquarters.
Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa, Chairman of Quang Thanh Commune, said that as of 6 am this morning the flooding started to rise, causing 20 to 30 cm floods in some 200 houses. The roads between communes and between villages that cross the area are divided.
“Accustomed to flooding, people from the low-lying and riverside areas have moved to the surrounding skyscrapers to avoid flooding,” said Mr. Khoa, saying that the waters continue to rise this morning.
The Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Information, in the past 24 hours, Thua Thien Hue has had heavy rains in a large area. Rainfall between 4 am on October 8 and 4 am on October 9 was typical of 100 to 250 mm. The water level of the Huong and Bo rivers is rising as the upstream Huong Dien, Binh Dien and Ta Trach lakes increase their flood discharge.
Rain and floods have left one person missing and four injured. More than 1,100 houses in Phong Dien District, Quang Dien, Huong Tra City were flooded with a depth of 30 to 80 cm.
