The Senkaku Islands are now controlled by Japan, but China is also claiming them.

According to SCMP, the Japanese coast guard announced yesterday that four Chinese seagoing vessels had invaded waters near the Senkaku Islands at 4 pm local time.

The Senkaku Islands are a chain of uninhabited islands currently controlled by Tokyo. China also claimed the islands and called them Diaoyu.

50 minutes later, Chinese seagoing vessels chased a Japanese fishing boat, about 12 km from Uotsuri Island. This is the largest island in the Senkaku Islands.

Immediately after receiving the news, the Japanese coast guard sent patrol boats to the scene, broadcasting a warning message to Chinese maritime ships by radio, Japanese media reported.

After noticing the Japanese patrol boats, four Chinese seagoing vessels left the area. The Japanese fishing boat with 3 crew members was not injured in the crash.

Earlier on August 8, the Chinese Coast Guard announced that seagoing vessels had performed the task of “patrolling the waters around the Diaoyu Islands.”

According to Kyodo News, 4 Chinese maritime ships appeared in the area for about 2 hours before being forced to leave.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has yet to comment on the clash.

Sino-Japanese relations have recently heated up. The two countries also regularly exchange medical supplies and support each other to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, on the issue of the sea and islands, Japan’s position in the Senkaku Islands did not change and it did not yield to China.

Last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping planned to make an official visit to Japan, but the visit was delayed due to Covid-19.
