Images posted to Facebook show fisherman Nate Iszac, 39, posing for a photo with a wolf eel he caught in the Bering waters off Alaska’s Akutan Island in mid-March.

The creature is about a meter long, has a giant mouth, powerful jaws, and sharp teeth. His fierce appearance makes many people think of the “sea monster” that comes out of a science fiction movie.

“When we saw an animal, we were scared and excited. It was known for its strong biting force, so we had to be careful when handling it,” Nate said. After taking a commemorative photo, Nate released the animal back into the sea. He quickly swam unscathed.

Nate’s personal Facebook post currently attracts hundreds of shares and comments. Many social media users expressed confusion when they first saw this monstrous creature.

The wolf eel is the largest species in the genus Anarrhichthys, also known as the sea lion or sea lion. Adults can be up to 2.4 m long and weigh 18.4 kg. They are carnivores, specialized in using powerful jaws to crush hard-shelled prey such as clams, snails, sea urchins, and crustaceans.
